Repair of Large Watermain Break on Hwy 221 at Elm St. is Complete
Spartanburg Water has lifted detour on Hwy 221 affecting traffic.

SPARTANBURG – The repair of the large watermain break, and the resulting roadway damage, on Hwy 221 at Elm St. is complete ahead of schedule. The detour is no longer needed, and drivers have full use of the road.

The detour was necessary while the repair of a 20-inch cast iron distribution waterline and the roadway near the intersection of Hwy. 221 (Chesnee Hwy.) and Elm Street was performed. Due to the depth of the waterline below ground and heavy equipment required to make the repair, the licensed contractor, Two Brothers, was selected to perform the work on behalf of Spartanburg Water.

With the logistics of the repair, including extensive repairs to the roadway, as well as the overall size of the repair and concerns for safety, a detour was utilized beginning on January 5, 2025, until Friday, January 9, until it was safe and feasible to open all lanes to traffic. The full project was projected to last 14 days, but was completed successfully in five days.
